The no-nonsense guide to choosing an SEO consultant in London

·3 mins

London is not like most places. Whatever your business does, someone else in the city is probably doing it too, often several streets away, sometimes in the same building.

That makes SEO in London a different game entirely. A dentist in Clapham isn’t competing with one or two other practices. They’re competing with dozens, all fighting for the same handful of searches, all with a website and a marketing budget of some kind.

So it’s no surprise London has more SEO consultants per square mile than almost anywhere else in the country. The problem is that most of them sound identical on a first call.

Not this

A consultant boasting about thousands of keywords targeted and dozens of blog posts a month, with nothing to show for it.

Do this

A consultant focused on the handful of searches that actually convert, even if the number looks smaller on paper.

Here’s how to tell the difference between someone who understands your market and someone reciting a script.

Scale changes everything, but the fundamentals don’t #

Whether you’re an accountant near Liverpool Street or a boutique selling homeware out of Peckham, the underlying work is the same as it is anywhere else: a technically sound site, keyword research grounded in how real customers actually search, and content that genuinely answers their questions.

What changes in London is the competition, and the sheer volume of it. A term that would take a few weeks to rank for in a smaller town might take months in London, simply because everyone else is chasing it too.

I’ve seen this pattern up close with manufacturers competing internationally, not just locally. One client, a copper tube manufacturer based in Coventry, needed to break into European and Middle Eastern markets against established competitors. Fixing technical debt and building targeted content got them there. You can read the full story here. The scale is different from a London high street business, but the underlying logic holds: fix what’s broken, then earn visibility for the searches that actually matter to your customers.

Watch out for the volume game #

Because London is such a big market, it attracts more than its share of consultants selling volume over precision: hundreds of “keywords targeted,” dozens of blog posts a month, thousands of backlinks. None of that means much if it isn’t aimed at the searches your actual customers use.

Cheap, high-volume SEO tends to look impressive in a report and do very little for your bottom line. A London business competing in a crowded market needs precision, not noise. Better to rank properly for twenty searches that convert than to sit on page four for two thousand that don’t.

What a good consultant for a London business does differently #

They’ll ask which part of London you actually serve, because “London SEO” covering the whole city is rarely the right strategy for a business rooted in one or two areas. A good one will also be upfront about how competitive your specific market is, rather than promising quick wins in a market that rarely allows for them. And success gets measured in enquiries and bookings, not just rankings on a dashboard.
