Need an SEO consultant in Cambridge? Here's the honest version
Table of Contents
Cambridge confuses a lot of SEO sellers. They see a university city with a booming tech and biotech scene, and assume every business here needs the same high-end, jargon-heavy strategy as a Science Park startup.
Most don’t.
A joiner working across Cambridge and out toward Ely doesn’t need a content strategy built around “thought leadership.” A physio clinic near the city centre doesn’t need a technical SEO audit built for a company with ten thousand pages. They need the basics done properly: a fast, well-structured site, the right local keywords, and a Google Business Profile that actually gets maintained.

If you’re not showing up for searches like those, it doesn’t matter how sophisticated your industry is. You’re losing customers to whoever does show up.
Not this
A one-size-fits-all "enterprise SEO" pitch that treats a local joiner the same as a Cambridge tech startup.
Do this
A strategy scaled to your actual business, built around the searches your real customers use.
Local doesn’t mean small-time #
Cambridge sits close enough to Ely, Huntingdon, and Newmarket that a lot of local businesses serve customers well beyond the city itself. An accountant based in Cambridge might work with clients out toward Newmarket. A dentist might draw patients from Huntingdon.
A good consultant asks about that upfront. They don’t just optimise for “Cambridge” and call it done. They map out the actual geography your business serves and build the keyword strategy around it.
That matters even more for a business near the market towns than it does for one right in the city centre. Someone searching from Ely or Huntingdon isn’t always going to type “Cambridge” into Google. Sometimes they’ll search their own town name instead, and if your site only ever mentions Cambridge, you’ll miss those searches entirely.
I’ve applied that same principle across manufacturers and service businesses in completely different regions. The Lawton Tubes manufacturing case study is a good example: same underlying method, different industry, different geography.
Don’t get talked into the wrong package #
Cambridge’s reputation for tech money means some SEO sellers pitch inflated packages full of jargon that doesn’t actually apply to a local service business. Ask what you’re paying for in plain English. If the answer sounds impressive but vague, that’s worth noticing.
If you’re weighing up whether you need outside help at all yet, my guide on doing SEO yourself walks through when DIY genuinely works and when it doesn’t.
The bottom line #
Cambridge businesses don’t need to sound clever to rank well. They need to be genuinely useful to the people searching for them, whether that’s a student looking for a dentist or a family out in Ely looking for a joiner.
